Oscar seems perfectly happy with those star knee patch pants I made for him (at least someone likes their new clothes!), so I decided to add another pair into the rotation. I’m a sucker for clouds and thought they might make cute little patches, so I went with that.
The crosshatch fabric is from the Architextures line, and I machine stitched around each cloud twice with silver metallic thread to give them “silver linings” – kinda cheesy and hardly noticeable, but it made me happy. Silver thread should get more use, if you ask me.
I actually made two pairs of these – the first pair came out looking like pajama bottoms to me….which, admittedly, isn’t such a big deal for a six month old, but since they take all of 45 minutes to make, I decided to try again with the black Carolina chambray. Here’s the blue pajama/hospital scrub version, which I think is destined to be given away:
The pattern for both pairs is the same as the star pants – Rae’s free Basic Newborn Pant pattern, with 1.25 inches of added length. I added a contrast cuff to these, and a fold-over cuff to the gray pair, which increased the overall length by another inch or so.
So yeah, I like adding knee patches to stuff. Boy sewing isn’t so bad after all.
I couldn’t get him to crack a smile for any of these photos, so I’m settling on this one in case anyone was hoping for a face shot. Kind of a serious, just-woke-up look, but at least he’s sitting still and not complaining that he hates his new pants. Good boy.
Both pairs are so cute on him! The clouds really make these and the silver lining is so clever. : )
Adorable on every level : )
I love these pants! I think I’ll have to go make a pair for my little girl now!
So cute! I love the idea of clouds for the knee patches.:)
I’ve just made a pair of similar pants with knee patches too for my son – I’m learning that it’s the small touches on boy clothes that makes them cute since the range of prints and styles are more limited than girls clothes. I love the colours you’ve used, soft and lovey but still so right for a little boy
Both pairs are absolutely adorable! Clouds should definitely be the new “mustaches” or “chevron”. So cute!
I love the silver lining clouds! So clever. I’m looking foreward to more of your “boy sewing”
oh gosh, he is so adorable!!! and the pants! I love how sweet they are. The silver thread is perfect, even if only you notice. π And those toes!!! I miss baby toes!
I’m baking baby number three, son number two and I feel completely underwhelmed with sewing ideas for him. I was the same for my first born son and instead of sewing things for him sewed for every little girl in the neighbourhood π Then I had my daughter and was set for a while haha! I’m hoping to get a bit more inspired this time around and these pants are great!
They are so adorable. Cloud knee patches with silver thread has been on my to do list for a little while too π Silver thread is my favourite and I love idea of using the crosshatch print.
Fantastic!! I’m a huge fan of cloud motifs and was actually thinking of making K a t-shirt with cloud elbow patches. Oscar is such a cutie, and I think the silver lining is awesome!
Oh, he look so much like Lila! Love that last picture:)
Those pants are so adorable – leave it to you to find a way to make the basic boy pant uber cool. And that contrast cuff – love it! Along with the silver lining thread . . . queen of details, you are:)
Those are the sweetest pants ever! Love them π
Those pants
I adore this, what a cute idea! I even love the ones that look like PJ’s. π
I never commented on these! I’m fired. But they are sooooo cute, those clouds are killing me and it’s so great those newborn pants have lasted him so long! I overheard Carolyn F. say at QM that the crosshatch was inspired by security envelopes, which is kinda awesome.
I love your blog !!!! I sewed for my grandson until he was 5 and my granddaughter until she was about 11. Now she is in musical theater at age 16 and I get to make costumes !! I just finished 5 outfits for “Amy” in Little Women and it was so much fun!!!! I used several Oliver +1 patterns for her when she was little and loved them. Keep sewing — I love seeing what you are sewing !!
