I’m back with a first day of school dress! I’ve used the Oliver + S Jump Rope dress pattern for Lila’s first day of preschool, Kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and now third grade. Tradition!
I actually made two Jump Rope dresses in the days before school started this year. The first was a size 8, which I chose based on the fact that I’ve gone up one size every year. It came out way too big. Turns out using your child’s actual measurements is a better sizing method – who knew?? I guess the upside is that next year’s dress is already finished? I’m hoping she might be able to wear a size 8 in fourth and fifth grade so we can finish out her elementary school career with this pattern.
The fabric is by Miriam Bos for Birch Fabrics, from her Wildland collection. Both my mom and my sister asked if I’d used this print before…no, but I definitely have a thing for navy blue fabric with little colorful shapes all over it. Some cases in point.
And I never posted about her second grade Jump Rope dress from last fall, so here’s a record that it existed. The older she gets, the more she actually wears these dresses – those early versions mostly hung in the closet, but the last two saw the light of day pretty regularly.
The Jump Rope dress remains my favorite Oliver + S pattern for all the reasons I detailed here, many years ago. Go ahead and make one (or six), you won’t regret it.
So nice to see a new blog post from you. The dress is fabulous!
Thank you! π
When I discovered you’re blog, I had one son. I saw the Oliver + S Museum pants you made your son and immediately bought the pattern to make a pair for my son’s first birthday. Eventually I went back and read through your posts and loved the patterns and fabrics you chose for your daughters clothes. One more son and now a four month old daughter later, I can already see I’ll be trawling through your posts again for inspiration for her clothes.
Thanks Nicole! I hope you enjoy girl sewing, it’s so much fun!
It’s so pretty. I love this pattern and made a few for my girls when they were toddlers. They didn’t get worn much because apparently my girls don’t love collars. Maybe I should try again!
You should! I don’t know why, but this pattern definitely grew on Lila with age π
Fantastic as always!!!!! And I am glad to hear these get more wear. It’s a great pattern on an older girl!
Thanks Inder! π
Lovely dress and lovely girl !
Thanks! π
I am always inspired by your annual Jump Rope dress. I’ve been known to buy quilting cottons immediately after seeing these posts! π
I had it in my head that it went to size 12. Aaarrrrgh, only 8?!!! You know, you could use the Building Block Dress to keep making these all the way into University π
Ha! That is a super hilarious thought!
I love this dress! And it’s such great inspiration, as you always are! I’m finally getting around to making View A of this dress and I thank you for the sizing hint!
Thanks, Elizabeth! I can’t wait to see your version! π
It’s beautiful!
