Oh hi I made a dress, you wanna see? Obviously I don’t keep up this space anymore, but I took some photos of this dress so I’m tossing it up here. I just kind of miss having everything I’ve made cataloged in one place. And having non iPhone photos of my children.
This is the Junie Dress by Brownie Goose patterns. It was my first time trying a pattern from Brownie Goose – no complaints, it all came together nicely. The bodice and skirt are separate in case you want to get creative with fabric, and there’s an option for a fuller skirt, which I used. I think I cut this dress out last July – it’s a size 6 with the bodice and skirt lengthened to a 7. I had to scrap the one-inch hem for a tiny one to save some length, but thankfully it fits eight year old Lila just about right.
It’s a simple little dress, but the bodice crosses over and ties in the back, which is what drew me to the pattern in the first place.
For awhile I was missing little girl sewing, but I’m feeling more motivated to sew for Lila lately. She still happily wears what I make and loves wearing dresses, so I’m always on the lookout for patterns that are fitting for girls her age – she’s outgrown of a lot of my old patterns, both in size and style. I think this one suits older girls as well as the younger set. Rachel at Stitched Together is a great source of inspiration for more grown-up patterns (and so much more).
The chambray is my regular old Kaufman variety, lightweight with a nice drape, still a favorite. And for the binding I used some long-saved pre-made Nani Iro bias tape from Jones & Vandermeer. There was just enough left to tack the bow to the front – another option included in the pattern.
I hope that front tooth takes its time coming in.
I agree, nice style for an 8-yr old. I miss your posts!
Lovely dress for a lovely (not so) little miss ! And always such a pleasure to read you here and enjoy our beautiful photography…
Beautiful dress which suits Lila so well. And how wonderful to read you here again, I love your style !
Such a treat to see your post in my inbox this morning! I’ve missed your blog! Lila is so beautiful (as always) and the dress is darling. 🙂
I, too, enjoy following your sewing and watching your kids grow up. It’s a beautiful dress on a grown-up little girl!
Love this dress for older girls. Since I’m not a fan of digital patterns I was wondering how you found the pattern was to piece together…pretty straightforward? I too have missed your blog..;)
I remember it being simple to piece together, and measurements are provided for the skirt if you don’t want to print that one out (it required the most piecing of pages together). Thanks for motivating me to post! 🙂
Always happy to see a post from you in my feed! Feel free to throw some photos on here anytime! What a lovely dress, casual but a bit special with that sweet back wrap and the binding! I agree, it’s a good style for an older child. I think once kids get to be a certain age, a natural waist tends to look better than an empire waist, and it’s nice if it’s not toooooo flouncy or ruffly or busy, not that you’ve ever been one for busy or overpowering designs! Your aesthetic is perfect, as always. xxxoo Inder
Aw thanks Inder, you’re so sweet! I totally agree about the empire waist – it’s adorable on little girls but I like a natural waist on Lila now, or even a dropped waist. And I’m definitely cool with no ruffles! 😉
very pretty dress!! Love that fabric, especially with the bias tape, such a nice detail that really adds to the style! as a Belgian I would recommend you the patterns of 2 of our most famous Belgian pattern designers: Compagnie M, and StraightGrain. They have lovely patterns in different styles going up to size 10 to 12. Really worth to have a look! I adore their patterns 🙂
Oooo! I like. Beautiful simplicity.
Love this! Thanks for sharing all of the details.
So exciting to see your post pop up in my feed!
Does the bow in the back seem to be uncomfortable? I love the look but I’d think the knot may be a bother.
Oh thanks! I wondered about that too but no complaints over here about the bow – I think the fact that it’s super soft double gauze probably helps!
oh so love having you post again… post more!! Have so missed your blogging – and beautiful dress!!
Yaaaay, you blogged!! So impressed. 🙂 I love the dress, great fabric selections and it looks super breezy and comfortable for summer. Agree about it being harder to think of good “in between” patterns for our girls and that Rachel is a great resource for ideas…I should try this one too.
Okay now you make me want to sew and blog again…!
Haha, it was kind of fun to pretend I was a blogger again! 🙂 E would look awfully cute in this one. And I miss seeing your sewing!
Echoing others in saying it was nice to see you in my blog feed again. It’s amazing how these kids of ours are growing! I still remember her kindergarten dress!
This one is lovely too.
Thank you, Shelley! 🙂
I came to show my three year old the “ice cream” dress I was going to make her and saw this new post.
Yes, we want to see the dress you made! Please post anything you make, even if that means w/o words, though that’s always fun. You always inspire and after three boys, I finally have a girl to sew for. :0)
p.s. thank you for the “stitched together” link, didn’t know about this one!
