As I was going through my photos from the year, I realized I made not ONE SINGLE THING for myself in 2014. Terrible, I know. The truth is, I did sew a few things, just nothing worthy of sharing – I made a Wiksten Tank and the Liesl & Co Bistro Dress, and while they were both great patterns, neither was especially flattering on me. I’m still trying to figure out sewing my own clothing, and clearly it isn’t going all that well. Maybe 2015 will be my breakthrough year.
So what did I sew? Well, Lila scored a few new dresses. Fifteen to be exact.
garden party | hide-and-seek | jump rope A | franklin | jump rope B | library B | hide-and-seek | mini poppy | carousel | roller skate | first day | roller skate | little joey | library A | geranium
The dresses definitely won out in terms of sheer numbers, but there were a few other things for Lila:
swingset tunic | school bus tee | sleepover pjs | 2+2 skirt | bucket hat | swingset skirt | swingset skirt | shearwater kaftan | bunny pjs
Oscar wasn’t fully ignored:
bow tie | happy homemade hoodie | bucket hat | hawthorn sweatshirt | small fry skinny cords | sketchbook shorts | field trip raglan | bunny pjs | dmk peacoat | art museum trousers
And there was an assortment of gifts and other random things:
baby girl’s coat | lullaby layette | ice cream dress | seal pjs | square floor cushion | lap duvet | divided basket | emmeline apron | rain cloud costumes
These were my 2014 personal favorites:
I learned to use and love my serger this year (it only sat in the box until April – not half bad, right?), and I learned to love boy sewing just a little bit more. And what I already knew was reinforced: making dresses sure is fun. The truth is, I don’t have any huge goals for the new year. I just want to make pretty things and then marvel at my kids as they wear them. I know it isn’t much, but that’s what makes me happy.
So anyway, Happy 2015 from these two, my reasons for sewing.
Love this! I just posted my 2014 recap today as well. :). I’m also going to “attempt” some sewing for myself this year. It’s just so much more fun sewing for the kids. You are a real motivation and inspiration to me. Thank you.
This is so nice to see, Gail, and I was so inspired by your use of all these beautiful fabrics that I just placed an order from one of your sponsors (Llama Fabrics) this morning! I hope you’ll continue sewing and blogging for a long time to come. Keep trying to sew clothes for yourself…Liesl’s Everyday Skirt (very nice in chambray!) is a great one to try. đŸ™‚
Such a beautiful collection of things you’ve made- You are always an inspiration.
I am already lookibg forward to this year’s creations!
Ah, those are two very good reasons for sewing!!! What a great year, I love how your aesthetic – solids mixed with a bit of generally understated print, in soft and muted colors – just shines through on these mosaics!
Muy bonito.
Aw Gail, I still just marvel at your ability to pick just the right fabrics and make such beautiful, peaceful clothing for your kids. You’re super inspring. As far as adult-wear, I think it’s so hard but you’ll get the hang of it the more you try. Make things that you wear anyway, maybe, or only a slight leap from your normal everyday wear…those seem to help me build confidence. But really though, if making clothes for your kids makes you happy, why beat yourself up over not sewing for yourself, ya know?? Anyway – I’m so glad we’re friends and I hope you and your family have a great 2015!
I wear a LOT of dresses–I like pockets and I wear a women’s 6 or 8. So if Lila gets tired of you making dresses for her, feel free to think of me and just scale it up a little. đŸ˜‰
And thanks again for the fun and muffins yesterday!
What a beautiful year of sewing! Great patterns and such perfect fabric choices! I hear you about the sewing for yourself thing, though. I tried one dress for myself and it was kind of a disaster. So instead I’m going to make myself some bags this year. That seems practical and more likely to be a success!
I’ve loved watching your creations this year. I have the Bistro dress on my project list for myself this year so now I’m a little worried if I’ll like it for me. I’ve made two Liesl & Co Everyday skirts and I’m pretty sure I would wear everyday if I could get away with it but it was the only two things that worked for me this year. I made a Cappuccino dress but it ended up being too snug in the chest so next time I won’t guess at my measurements. You have definitely inspired me with you fabric choices so often. Love your blog.
Ok YUP this year needs to be about SEWING FOR GAIL!!!! đŸ™‚ Love this roundup though, your kids are lucky little ones to have such beautiful handmade wardrobes!!!!
It all looks so beautiful together. obviously you have particularly good taste! 9and so I’m very curious to see that Bistro dress).
I really, really love those little rain clouds. that was just the cutest thing ever.
Your kids are gorgeous! Isn’t sewing for little ones the BEST?
gail – i thought i commented on this already! what a great year you had! i am surprised how the sewing really adds up! i felt like this was a quieter year for you, maybe just because i love your blog so much i want you to post more frequently,;) but you really made a lot! my favorite dresses are the blue polka dotted geranium and the grey corduroy holiday dress. but they are all so good. and i will eagerly look forward to any self sewing posts you have. i think you and i may have a similar body type, so if it works for you, maybe it would work for me too? i always knew the washi would not work for me!
your blog is a beautiful, peaceful space in the midst of the noise of the interwebs and i am thankful for it! thanks for being so inspiring!
super productive year! I love seeing all those O & S dresses – esp, the Hide and Seek dress which is my current favorite of theirs. The Mini Poppy is super fun too – hope she got some good wear from it. And glad to hear you’ve embraced sewing for Oscar:) How could you not when you see that awesome pea coat and skinny cords?!
You’ve inspired me to sew way more dresses and skirts for my daughter… I just can’t decide which one! And those Cotton and Steel skirts – love ya work!!
