Happy Kids Clothes Week!
When I planned for possible projects for the week, I decided I wanted to make a few things for Oscar. I’m trying, I really am, but I’m still struggling with the whole sewing-for-boys thing. There have been a few attempts here and there, but they’ve all left me feeling hemmed in by “boy” choices, and I just end up fantasizing about how the project might look if I were sewing for a girl.
These little pants, however, made me perfectly happy to be boy-sewing.
I started out with the Basic Newborn Pant pattern, a freebie available at Made by Rae. Kristin made Oscar two adorable pairs when he was born, and the longer pair still fits well at almost six months. So it seemed like a good pattern to play with.
The star knee patches (inspired by Mini Boden) were appliquéd with Steam-a-Seam 2, then secured with embroidery floss and a running stitch around the edges. If the patches look a little low it’s because he was asleep when I placed them, and that was my best guess. Baby proportions are elusive.
Pattern :: Rae‘s free Basic Newborn Pants (legs lengthened by a little over an inch, and waistband folded down an extra 1/2 inch to lose a little of the rise). Cuff tutorial courtesty of you & mie.
Fabric :: Essex Yarn Died Linen in Denim, and Moda Crossweave in aqua for the stars.
Love them, Gail. So cute!
Adorable!! Love the stars and the little guy looks so so sweet. 🙂
Gail, they are super-cute! The pattern looks like a great cut and I like your fabric choice. Classic boy awesomeness!
Very nice indeed!
So cute! The stars are really great 🙂
gorgeous gail! oscar is such a cutie 🙂
I love the stars and cuffs and the pants look like a great fit (you’re having fun sewing boy clothes:))!
These are super cute!!! I had a hard time w that too when my son (now4) was born… I just kept thinking about all the little dresses he didn’t need! For him I love buying the basics and then adding things to them, like elbow patches, or appliqués of his drawings printed on fabric… Adorable little guy!
He’s awfully cute. What’s your esthetic for boys? If it’s in your comfort zone, there are a lot of ways to make a button-up shirt very exciting to sew — different shapes of collar, different plackets, narrow tucks, semi-button (with a bib, and then the bib can get all kinds of nice treatments), showcasing all different kinds of nice chambrays, linens, shirting fabrics — a great way to repurpose dad’s shirts or excuse to shop for fabrics you might not ordinarily use for a girl. Some folks find it too dressy and maybe impractical or too much work for a little kid (although school uniforms are much like this and don’t seem to hamper running and playing): http://www.jacadi.us/VAD/boy-themes-2-12-years/ut:2:1:7:43.htm for example.
Half the time I dress my daughter like a tiny Japanese dandy, though, because a toddler can get away with a lot more whimsy.
Yes! So hard to find cute ideas for boys. Thanks for sharing!!
Adorable pants! I love the stars.:)
Adorable! And he has gotten so big! I hear you with the boy sewing but since I only have a son I don’t know what I’m missing ;). It gets easier as they get bigger.
for feeling uninspired by boy clothing, you certainly managed to sew up the most adorable boy pants! love them! the stars are the perfect touch. your little guy looks like such a honey:)
Awww, he looks so cute in those pants!!!
super cute baby. super awesome pants. love it.
i would say – don’t feel like you have to sew boy clothes. if i had a baby/toddler boy, i’d probably sew AMH’s quick change pants. but i rarely sew for my son at all, probably for the same reasons as you. i’m not really inspired to make pants or button down shirts. i made my son one pair of pants and he could really care less either way. i have sewn several school days jackets for him, which i find gratifying. and freezer stenciling shirts with a preschool aged boy (or girl!) is lots of fun. oh, pajamas/pajama pants are fun too. obviously at this age, your son doesn’t care one way or the other. so i say: no pressure. sew what you love. 🙂
I have two boys, no girls. This post here changed the way I think about sewing for them. Also, if you haven’t already, browse some of the past seasons of PR&P and check out some of the awesome boy outfits. http://www.projectrunplay.com/2012/10/guest-judge-jessica-from-little-gray.html
The star knee patches are absolutely adorable. I might have to steal that for my toddlers 🙂
These are gorgeous! You can’t go wrong with linen and kids clothes in my opinion…
cute pants, cute baby!
Eeeep! So cute! Star patches – really adorable. I do think boy sewing gets easier as they get a little older. Well, I think all sewing gets easier once the kids are upright and walking. 🙂
They are so cute! Love them in linen and you can’t go wrong with star patches. Maybe you’ll get a bit more excited once he’s a little bit older and fits into more patterns.
Awww, super cute!!! I love them. And Oscar is rocking them!
