Yes, this post is mostly just an excuse to put up new photos of baby Oscar, but I did make some burp cloths I can show you, too. You’ll have to sift through the baby pictures to find them, though…
Awhile back I ordered some cloth diapers online to make burp cloths and had intended to sew a panel of fabric down the center, but I ended up with the kind that wash up to be very quilted and bumpy, so I had to come up with another plan.
The diapers are super soft and absorbent, and I wanted to maximize the surface area that could be used to mop up the spit, but still add a little pop of color. I know there are already plenty of ways to make a burp cloth, but here’s another one for ya.
To make these I just cut 2-inch strips of fabric and folded them like bias tape to bind the edges of the diapers – I cut the strips on the grain, since I was binding a straight edge. Then I sandwiched each end of the diaper in the binding, tucked 1/2 an inch in on the ends, and sewed across.
A pack of six diapers is less than $12, so they come out to about $2 each – not bad at all.
Oh, and hi from Oscar…he slept through most of his first week, but he’s much more alert now. And kinda cute, or so we think.
And Lila is still his #1 fan…
Adorable!!
Congratulations to you and your family Gail, Oscar is indeed ADORABLE! Love that lion outfit;) I also think cloth diapers are excellent as burp cloths and when I was pregnant with my first born I asked my sister to send some over as I couldn’t find them here in Australia and I ended up adding bias to the ends and also did some some with ribbon and even sewed some with colorful thread using a machine embroidery stitch. I’m still using them today with my second baby. Yours are so cute! Thanks for sharing these gorgeous pics with us readers.
Love!! Oscar is so so cute! And so are those burp cloths. Love your blog!!
Omigosh seriously. He’s one of the cutest babies ever. Can’t wait to snuggle him!!! Love the burp cloths too – nice to add just a little somethin’ somethin’ to a very practical item.
So adorable!!!! (I mean the baby!) The burp cloths are too cute, as well!
He is one of the cutest babies I have ever seen! Wow – you guys create adorable little people. 🙂 These are awesome. I love the bias tape. I made some with the fabric down the middle, but I prefer the look of yours. I really loved using prefold diapers at this stage, too. They wash up so quickly and easily and contain all of the explosive baby poo. Was that too much? Prefolds are the best!
Seriously, that is one cute baby. The picture in the crab outfit is just about the best thing ever. And I love this idea. I used cloth diapers with my first son and am planning to with the one on the way, and it will be great to have a way to keep the ones I use for burping separate from the ones I use for the bum.
So cute!! excessive baby pics are always allowed!! Loth cloth diapers for burp cloths, they are definitely the best! Love the way you prettied them up 🙂
just seeing his adorable baby face made me smile:) so glad you’re loving on your little one.
I have a bunch of these that I use for actual diapering – but the edges are starting to fray. I think I might go ahead and edge them this way for in the diapers!
Trimming the ends is a great idea. You won’t cover up the middle if the diaper, the most absorbent part
Congratulations, Gail. He looks so cuddly with all that hair. Hope everyone is adjusting well!
cute burp cloths! can never have too many of those lying around… And that baby is absolutely beautiful 🙂

Totally cute! I love these simple (but adorable) burp cloths! And that little Oscar is really something special… what a cutie!
So absolutely adorable! The burp cloths are super cute and Oscar is just to die for cute!!
Congrats on baby Oscar. New follower here. I had my second child on Oct. 15th, also a boy. Boys are so different than girls. So much more snuggly!
Your children are beautiful!! Oscar is one of the cutest newborns i have ever seen! 🙂

Hi Gail! I hope little Oscar (and Lila) let you get that sewing machine whirring again soon… Miss seeing your awesome creations here! Hope you’re well! 🙂
Gail, I’m waaay behind on my blog reading. Congratulations! What a beautiful baby. Cheers!
Thanks for the great burp cloth tutorial! I came here by way of Anna’s blog (http://www.noodle-head.com), btw. The kids are soooooo cute! Thanks for including the gratuitous pics!
burp cloths are too cute and baby as well…
Hi Gail, I went to the diaper site and am a BIT overwhelmed at which ones to order. Some give you sizes, some don’t. I like the quilted absorbant type that you descrived, any chance you can tell me which ones you ordered?
Thanks for the inspiration. My first grand daughter is here, 6 weeks premature and I am LOVING the chance to make things for her, to show my love and excitement. My daughter and her husband are doing a great job of parenting and I want to support them as they give her the best start.
Sure! If you click on the “cloth diapers” link in the post you’ll find the diapers I used – they are Bumkins infant prefolds (12 x 16 inches).
Love this burp cloth idea! I used your idea to make some for my baby coming in April!
